Before making a Belmont Stakes prediction, it is worth examining the recent trends to narrow down the potential winners. Below, you can find the latest trends to consider before assessing the Belmont Stakes horses.
Todd Pletcher trained the winner of the Belmont Stakes last year, and he once again has a strong hand in 2023. Forte was unfortunately scratched late from the Kentucky Derby, despite being a clear favorite. He returns to the track at Belmont Park, but his form remains extremely solid.
He was last seen landing the G1 Florida Derby with a career-best speed figure of 102 when beating Mage by a length. That was his fifth straight victory, but the long layoff could be a potential factor that goes against him in the Belmont Stakes. However, previous winning experience at Belmont Park is a massive factor in his favor.
Angel of Empire could easily be the value angle for Brad Cox. The trainer trained the winner of the Belmont Stakes in 2021, and this three-year-old will be among the value plays in the Belmont Stakes odds.
He has shown an upward trajectory throughout his career, reaching a career-best speed rating of 104 when finishing third in the Kentucky Derby on his previous start. Prior to that, he had won the G1 Arkansas Derby and G2 Risen Star Stakes in 2023. There is a clear argument behind the fact that we could see even further improvement over this first attempt over 1.5 miles.
Tapit Trice is another runner from the Pletcher yard, and it’s hard to completely dismiss his chances. The three-year-old was unfortunate in the Kentucky Derby, as he eventually finished down in seventh. That run hit a speed figure of 95, which matched his run when landing the G3 Tampa Bay Derby.
On his start before the Derby, he landed the G1 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland, finishing well clear of Blazing Sevens, who finished a narrow second in the Preakness Stakes. That piece of form could yet prove a crucial indicator when it comes to making a Belmont Stakes prediction.
The latest Belmont results certainly indicate that Arcangelo could be a runner to avoid this weekend. The Jena Antonucci runner was the winner of the dreaded Peter Pan Stakes on his previous start, reaching a career-best speed figure of 99. However, it is extremely concerning that only two winners have won both the Peter Pan and Belmont Stakes since 1987.
Another runner with limited value this weekend comes in the form of National Treasure. The three-year-old for Bob Baffert upset the horse racing picks to land the Preakness Stakes on his previous start, but he looked to be fading in the closing stages over 1 3/16 miles. That certainly doesn’t bode well for a run over this extended distance.
Angel of Empire could easily be the solid play at the current prices this weekend. He looked to be gathering speed in the closing stages at Churchill Downs in early May, and this extra distance certainly promises to bring out even more improvement from this progressive Cox-trained runner.
Forte is a solid play underneath, while Red Route One could be another contender that looks set to thrive over this extended distance.
