Veteran actor Ratna Pathak Shah recently called out stars with entourages and compared them to three-month-old babies who “can’t even hold their coffee cups”. Ratna, in a chat with Film Companion, had shared that she has seen careers of several “good actors” get “adversely affected by this entourage business”. Bhumi Pednekar, who is presently promoting her film Bheed with Rajkummar Rao, was asked by the same publication how entourages and vanity vans affect their craft and the actor said that it is up to an individual as to how “grounded” they want to be.
Bhumi said that this is not just about a vanity van, and added, “I think that’s more about how disconnected you are from the world outside. I could be sitting on a chair in the middle of my set and still not speak to anybody, or I could be in my van which I use to get ready. Everybody’s views are respected but I feel that with every generation… It’s up to us how we want to stay connected with our craft, how we want to stay grounded.”
Bhumi Pednekar acknowledged the privilege of vanity vans that has been bestowed upon her generation and said that she feels “very fortunate that we have that kind of a space that maybe many people in earlier generations didn’t get” and called her van her “secure space”. Bhumi added that “it is about creating a democratic environment around you, that’s what keeps you grounded.”
Rajkummar Rao said that he still likes to eat roadside food and shared, “I don’t want to stop living my life just because I am an actor.”
Ratna Pathak Shah had previously said that traveling with an entourage makes one “even more self-focused and self-absorbed”. She shared an anecdote where she saw an actor handing over their coffee cup to their assistant after every sip. “I have seen actors on planes who won’t even ask for a cup of coffee. The coffee is brought by an assistant, assistant opens the cup, actor takes sip, hands it back to assistant. What are you? A 3-month-old child? That you can’t even hold a cup? This level of dependence?”
