CBS Sports is working with Israeli sports tech ecosystem Hype Sports Innovation to identify new ways to enhance the US broadcaster’s sporting coverage.
Tel Aviv-based Hype matches rights holders with ‘vetted’ technology vendors, helping the former accelerate their technological roadmap whilst managing risk and opening doors for early stage companies.
Hype currently works with around 200 teams, leagues and federations, and has interacted with more than 3,500 sports tech startups since it launched in 2015.
Specifically, Hype and CBS will work together on artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and remote broadcast capabilities. The goal is to make backend operations more efficient and bring fans closer to the sport they are watching by offering entirely new experiences.
Both outcomes are desirable at a time when the cost of sports rights is increasing and when there is intense competition for subscribers in a challenging economic climate. Meanwhile, the scale of CBS Sports would make it a huge partner for most of the startups in Hype’s ecosystem.
CBS Sports coverage spans the eponymous television network, free ad-supported television (FAST) services and subscription streaming platforms, and the CBS Sports Network cable channel. Its US rights portfolio includes the National Football League (NFL), college sports, and PGA Tour golf, as well as the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and the National Women’s Basketball Association (WNBA).
CBS also covers the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Uefa Champions League on Paramount+ streaming service.
“We are excited to work with Hype Sports Innovation and many of the leading technology companies from around the world to further enhance our coverage and deliver never-before-seen technology to our audiences, while developing more creative and compelling content, as well as innovative experiences” said Jason Cohen, vice president, remote technical operations, at CBS Sports.
“We are committed to continue pushing the boundaries of sports experience through our collaboration with CBS Sports,” added Amir Raveh, chief executive of Hype Sports Innovation.
“Together, we have the opportunity to create an unforgettable sports viewing experience by introducing new technology and innovation that fans will truly love.”
