DeAndre Hopkins is set to take the first step in his NFL free agency on Sunday.
Per a report from Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, Hopkins is flying to Nashville this weekend for a free-agent visit with the Tennessee Titans.
It will be his first free-agent visit since the Arizona Cardinals cut him in May.
Signing with Tennessee would mean a reunion for Hopkins with Titans head coach Mike Vrabel, who coached him as a member of the Texans’ staff from 2014-2017.
Hopkins was a five-time All-Pro wide receiver before he regressed in 2021 and 2022, playing in just 19 games and totaling fewer receptions over the two years than he made in 2020 alone.
The Cardinals decided to cut bait with Hopkins after they were unable to find a trade partner for the expensive receiver.
Hopkins has a cap number of $29,988,890 in 2023 and $25,453,886 in 2024, which make up the last two years of an extension he signed in 2020.
Beyond the money question, reports also surfaced that the Cardinals were upset with Hopkins sitting out the final two games of the 2022 season.
Hopkins listed Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts, and Justin Herbert as quarterbacks he’d like to play with on the “I Am Athlete” podcast last week.
“What I want is stable management upstairs,” Hopkins said on the podcast. “I think that’s something I haven’t really had the past couple years of my career coming from Houston and then to Arizona.”
The Titans’ quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who joined the team in 2019 and has since led Tennessee to three consecutive playoffs before 2022, is noticeably absent from Hopkins’ initial wish list of young pass-throwers.
They do, however, have second-year QB Malik Willis and 2023 draft pick Will Levis in the pipeline.
The Titans have also just experienced turnover at the general manager position, as the team fired Jon Robinson and hired Ran Carthon in January.
Carthon is a former player who has spent the last six seasons with some of the most successful front offices in football.
He was a part of the Rams front office that drafted Aaron Donald and Cooper Kupp, as well as the 49ers team that drafted Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel.
It’s unclear if Hopkins could help the Titans improve upon their 7-10 record in 2022, but they will be the first team who gets a chance to land the former All-Pro.
