This probably won’t surprise many Penn State fans, but Ji’Ayir Brown is apparently putting together a pretty, darned good start to his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers.
The former Nittany Lions safety, who San Francisco took in the third round, 87th-overall, in April’s draft, drew some major praise from Niners veteran receiver Brandon Aiyuk late last week.
“That’s my locker mate, so I’ve been talking to him, watching him, looking out for him,” Aiyuk reportedly said. “We got him today, and I’ve been telling him we were gonna get him one of these days. But he’s doing a great job. He’s got three or four picks already through these first couple of days. He just comes in willing to work, doesn’t say too much, so I like him.
“I like him a lot.”
Aiyuk added, “He’s getting to the ball as a safety, so you love to see it.”
Aiyuk isn’t the only person impressed by Brown, though.
“He has our DNA that we’re looking for on defense,” Niners defensive backs coach Daniel Bullocks said. “We’re looking for a guy that’s physical, that’s smart, that can finish. When you look at Ji’Ayir, he’s versatile. He can line up on all three levels of the defense. He can line up on the line of scrimmage. He can rush off the edge. He can drop back a level and play man coverage. He can play zone as well. And he can also drop back into the post and show that range and go get the football.”
The Niners were good last year, and figure to be good again this year — particularly on defense — and it looks like Brown will have a chance to play a big part in that.
The NFL could be moving a step closer to doing away with the days of the “chain gang” measuring first downs, according to multiple reports.
