Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope has been replaced in the England squad by Tottenham Hotspur’s Fraser Forster due to injury.

Pope, 30, was called up by Gareth Southgate on Thursday along with fellow goalkeepers Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale.

However, Pope has now withdrawn despite managing to play the full 90 minutes of Newcastle’s 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest on Friday.

Pope, who missed the majority of this week’s training sessions before playing with the minor injury on Friday, will receive treatment during the international break.

Forster, who has not played for England since 2016, has featured 13 times for Tottenham this season.

The 35-year-old has deputised for the injured Hugo Lloris since the start of February.

Forster conceded three goals against Southampton on Saturday as Tottenham drew 3-3 with his former side.

He has however been praised for his recent performances with Tottenham assistant manager Cristian Stellini among his admirers.

“I like Fraser like a man, because he is a very good man,” Stellini said recently. “His behaviour this season was perfect.

“Every day, he pushes himself to train really hard and, with this behaviour, he pushes Hugo to train very hard.

“He is a great man before a great goalkeeper because we don’t have to forget (that) we are men before we are players.

“The difference between Hugo is we start to think physically. He (Forster) is a keeper perfect for the Premier League style, for the type of game we are going to play in the Premier League, and he uses both feet when he plays with the ball.

“We trust in him. We completely trust in him.”

England start their Euro 2024 qualification campaign away to Italy on Thursday and then host Ukraine next Sunday.
