Savannah (Ga.) Christian Prep five-star defensive lineman Elijah Griffin, the 247Sports Composite’s No. 1 ranked football prospect in the rising junior class, will return to Athens very soon. Griffin announced on Sunday via his personal Twitter account that he plans to visit Georgia on June 1. Griffin is coming off visits to Clemson and South Carolina last weekend.
The Gamecocks and Dawgs are considered the top two programs in contention for Griffin, who last visited Georgia in April for the G-Day spring game.
“Had a great time,” Griffin told 247Sports National Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong last month. “It’s a great city. I see myself playing there. People there are awesome. It’s nice little college town. It’s overall a great atmosphere.”
The 6-foot-3.5, 270-pound defensive lineman made 82 tackles, 30 tackles for loss, and 14.5 sacks during his sophomore campaign and had 69 tackles, eight tackles for a loss, five quarterback hurries, and 3.5 sacks as a freshman.
Below is the scouting report for Griffin from 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins:
A large, athletic defensive lineman with exceptional get-off at this stage in his development. Checked into the National Combine back in Jan. 2022 at 6-foot-3.5 and a compact 270 pounds. Tested well at the showcase event posting a respectable 5.1 in the 40-yard dash. Also raised some eyebrows with his near 35-inch vertical jump. Hasn’t played the toughest competition to date in the Peach State’s lower classifications, but looked like a man amongst boys as a freshman at Savannah Christian Prep where he totaled 69 tackles and 3.5 sacks while facing his fair share of double teams. Comfortable working as a 4 or 5-technique in a 4-3 front, but figures to eventually kick inside as he continues to grow into his frame (has an 80-inch wingspan to go along with 10-inch hands). Wins plenty of battles with his heavy hands and a lower pad level, but will eventually need to get better at redirecting and learn how to not get washed away. Rare physical traits combined with natural feel for the position give him one of the higher ceilings in the class of 2025. Will need to keep developing, but should be able to eventually make an impact on Saturdays.
