FOR ALMOST half a century, the fashion designer Norma Kamali has taken an annual birthday trip. Right now, though she’ll turn 78 within weeks, she still doesn’t know where she’s going. That’s because she doesn’t make the decision—her astrologer does. Or rather, depending on where you stand on the heavens as a source for answers, the planets do.
As her birthday approaches, the astrologer will consult Ms. Kamali’s “solar return” chart and use it to determine the best place for her to start the next year of her life. Each year the spot changes depending on planetary transits. In the past, Ms. Kamali has been sent to Bahia, Brazil (“an extraordinary experience”); Manchester, England (“I spent my birthday laughing so hard I was exhausted”); Chennai, India (“life-changing”); and, once, Cincinnati, Ohio (“actually pretty cool”).
