Visitors to Hawaii have been sleeping easy thanks to a run of extremely affordable ticket prices on flights between the various islands.

For the last half year, one-way interisland flights could be had for as low as $39 any day of the week – a super deal considering it’s the only way to get between the islands.

But according to fare calendars, the availability of low-price tickets will decrease substantially going forward. Cheap flights may still be available on certain days, but we are already seeing cost increases on weekends and other popular times to $49 and $59 one way on both Hawaiian and Southwest Airlines.

These prices are certainly higher than the $39 we’ve been treated to of late, but they are admittedly more in line with what prices were before the pandemic and before the arrival of Southwest Airlines. In fact, the low prices came about as part of a “fare war” between Hawaiian and Southwest last fall.

Even with the increase, Hawaiian and Southwest are still the cheapest route between the islands. Smaller airlines, such as Mokulele Airlines, were once competitive options, but now its fares are much, much higher, with one-way flights between $140-$200 at the moment, depending on where you fly.

If minimizing cost is priority number one, be sure to arrange your travel between the islands during the week, from Monday to Thursday, when fares are still offered at $39 one-way. Avoiding business commuter times (8am, 6pm) will help as well.

Another tip: If you’re planning a trip this summer, book sooner-than-later to lock in the low prices while they last. Worst case, you can always rebook at a lower price later thanks to friendly cancellation policies (be sure to confirm before booking, but most airlines have dropped all change fees).

Otherwise, there’s not much you can do if you want to island hop. There are no ferries between the islands anymore, except between Maui-Molokai and Maui-Lanai. All other island trips need to be made on a plane.
