If you booked that pricey trip out of the country this summer, make sure to be on time, as millions of passengers are expected to travel in and out of Dallas.
Domestic airfare is averaging $306 per ticket, down 19% from last year and up 6% compared with summer 2019, according to travel destination site Hopper. Airfare to Europe and Asia this summer is the highest it’s been in over five years. Trips to Europe are averaging over $1,100 per ticket, and trips to Asia average over $1,800 per ticket.
More than 22.3 million passengers are expected to pass through DFW International Airport this summer. The total number of travelers expected at DFW this summer is anticipated to increase by more than 7% compared with 2019. Fort Worth-based American Airlines is expecting over 52 million customers between May 25 and Aug. 14.
The number of seats available on flights at DFW and Dallas Love Field is about 13% higher than in 2022 and about 7% more than 2019, with over 37.1 million between the beginning of Memorial Day weekend and the end of Labor Day weekend.
Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate, said data is showing that this summer will be another busy year.
Airports and government agencies are “warning of another very busy summer at the airport, which is great that people are traveling and having fun,” he said. “It’s maybe not so great if there’s a lot of cancellations and delays.”
So what days should you arrive early or plan ahead?
At DFW Airport and Dallas Love Field, the most available seats on planes will be available on July 7 and 10, the Friday and Monday after Independence Day, totaling over 5,000 flights and over 776,000 people who could be traveling in the area. The airports will be busy with travelers heading to and from Dallas-Fort Worth. Across the summer, the busiest days to travel, with the potential for the most passengers at the airport, will be Monday, Saturday and Thursday, according to flying analytics firm Cirium.
The top three destinations coming out of DFW and Love Field this summer are Abilene, Texas; Pensacola, Fla.; and Monroe, La. The three most frequent international destinations for summer 2023 are Monterrey, Mexico; Tokyo; and Morelia, Mexico, according to Cirium data.
This summer is expected to be one of the busiest yet, as international destinations like Europe and Asia have loosened pandemic restrictions. Memorial Day proved to be a strong start of the summer season for airlines, as carriers like Southwest Airlines and American Airlines reported minimal cancellations and delays.
