TOKYO (Kyodo) — Third-favorite Stunning Rose won the 27th running of the Shuka-sho at Hanshin Racecourse on Sunday as she and jockey Ryusei Sakai both secured their first Grade One crowns.
Stunning Rose placed herself behind the leading pack before surging to the fore in the final stretch and holding off second-favorite Namur by half a length to finish the 2,000-meter race in 1 minute, 58.6 seconds.
Favorite Stars on Earth finished a further nose behind, missing out on the filly Triple Crown following her wins at April’s Oka-sho and May’s Japanese Oaks.
“I want to thank everyone who has been associated with Stunning Rose,” said Sakai. “I could check her controllability from a previous race. We got ourselves into a good position today.”
“The Grade One race is something I’ve been dreaming of. It’s the best feeling ever.”
