Balon D’or was third in the Lily Agnes at Chester last month and comes here with a solid claim for Hugo Palmer, while dual all-weather winner Yorkshire Terrier is a contender to try to make all for Oisin Murphy and Charlie Johnston.
There are lots of likely improvers here – and they include HAATEM for Richard Hannon. He looked a work in progress on debut at Goodwood early last month but has since hoovered up a Bath novice over this trip, and Pat Dobbs’s partner should have more to come.
Selection: Haatem @ 9/2 with Paddy Power
Rhoscolyn was an impressive winner in one previous Epsom start in 2021 and could be well handicapped if relishing the return now, while Austrian Theory is another that ran well in his only visit here and looks well treated for Charlie Johnston.
REPERTOIRE won a fortnight ago at Newmarket for trainer David Simcock and, even allowing for a 4lb rise, the experienced gelding could still be lurking dangerously if in the same mood with Hollie Doyle booked to ride.
Selection: Repertoire @ 12/1 with Paddy Power
A select but smart renewal as last year’s Derby third Westover and Oaks second Emily Upjohn return to the Downs. The filly lacks a recent run but does go well fresh for the Gosden team and Frankie Dettori, though she will want to avoid a repeat of the slow start that cost her here last June.
Westover was second in the Sheema Classic at Meydan in March and is a player back on home soil but POINT LONSDALE is unexposed at this trip and arrives here after wins at the Curragh and Chester as he bids to make up for a curtailed 2022 season. The Ballydoyle-based son of Australia has plenty of potential at the trip. The 2021 Irish Derby and St Leger winner Hurricane Lane adds to the intrigue for Charlie Appleby.
Selection: Point Lonsdale @ 4/1 with Paddy Power
Recent Newmarket winner Honiton has claims for the Gosden team in the hands of James Doyle carrying the Godolphin blue, while William Buick sticks with last month’s York winner Marhaba The Champ for trainer Kevin Ryan.
They are respected at the front of the market, as is Dual Identity for William Knight, but CADILLAC is a classy sort at his best and could yet recapture that potential for new trainer George Boughey.
A Listed winner last season for Jessica Harrington in Ireland, he should be sharper for his Newmarket comeback last month (a first start since being gelded) and, on just his fourth outing for this trainer, a pair of first-time cheekpieces and a declining mark could put him in the mix under Kevin Stott for the first time.
Selection: Cadillac @ 14/1 with Paddy Power
Savethelastdance was very, very impressive in her Cheshire Oaks romp at Chester last time – but that came on testing ground, and conditions will be different now in this altogether more classy affair.
Aidan O’Brien is going for his fourth Oaks win on the trot but the likes of Soul Sister under Dettori for the Gosdens and Lingfield trial winner Eternal Hope for Appleby are big threats.
The same goes for RUNNING LION, with main man Oisin Murphy in the saddle. She is a second Gosden-trained contender and looked impressive herself in a convincing Newmarket success in the Pretty Polly Stakes last month. She has got more racecourse experience than plenty of her rivals and looks to be still improving.
Selection: Running Lion @ 5/1 with Paddy Power
