As the fans miss him with the WTC final approaching, Pant responded to one such message
India will take on Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at the Oval in London starting June 7. Even though India defeated the World No. 1 Test team a few months ago 2-1 in the four-match series, however, Australia start as favourites this time around. While many would say that the seaming and swinging conditions will aid Australia, which it will, however, there’s one more reason for the Pat Cummins-led side looking like the favourites – the lack of three first-choice players for India. India will be without the likes of Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul.
Pant and Bumrah have been the leaders of the attack for India in their respective departments in Test cricket in the last few years and their absence in the WTC final will be felt the most. Pant, who was the hero of India’s improbable win at the Gabba has single-handedly destroyed bowling line-ups while taking the attack to the opposition. Now ahead of the WTC 23 final, the fans have been missing Pant a lot because of his positive intent, audacious shot-making and for the sheer entertainment he provides on the field.
Wisden India’s Twitter handle shared a heartfelt post for Pant saying that every cricket fan is missing and the wicket-keeper batter was quick to react to it. “I am also missing playing cricket,” Pant responded.
The 25-year-old wicket-keeper has been out of action for nearly six months since his brutal car accident on the Delhi-Dehradun highway in December 2022. Pant suffered several bodily injuries and a knee ligament tear for which he underwent surgery. Even though Pant has started walking and is undergoing rehabilitation at the NCA, it will take him another 6 months, reportedly to come back to the game. Pant has the second highest number of runs for India in the WTC 2021-23 cycle before the finale and will hope that the Indian players come to the party and go one better this time around.
