When severe weather comes through Morgan County and damages roofs, there has been one family business residents have called for 51 years for repairs: GL Roofing.
Located at 102 Prospect St., the business was founded by Gil Lujan. Seven years ago, Lujan’s son, Matt, took it over. Matt said he knew he had huge shoes to fill when he took over the business, but with everything his father taught him about working with customers and making sure every job is done correctly, he has seamlessly kept the family business running.
“I’m just a guardian of what my parents built,” Matt said.
The guardian of GL Roofing has been busy over the last month because of the severe weather the area has faced. From tornados to hail, Matt said he’s looked at 97 roofs in the last three weeks and has received 140 phone calls in the same period. His days have started around 6:30 a.m. and don’t end until almost 9:00 p.m.
Despite the long hours he’s facing right now, the drive that keeps him moving is the notion of guarding the family business, but also knowing each day of hard work is a tribute to his brother Steve who passed away a few years ago.
“It’s family values, family morals,” Matt said.
A strong family bond, treating the customers the right, and providing quality service have kept the business running for half a century, but it’s also earned them the June 2023 Business of the Month honor.
“It’s pretty cool,” Matt said of the honor.
With the family being in the community for so long, Matt said it’s a neat experience to drive through Fort Morgan and point out all the homes that he and his staff have worked on over the years. It’s a lot of pointing too as generations of families still use the company for their roofing needs. The latter is a credit to the Lujan family for never taking shortcuts in their work and still applying the philosophy of the ‘customer is always right’.
But it’s not all about the bottom line for Matt. He said his fondness for the community is immense and he’s always trying to pay it forward whenever possible. From Golden Stars to Rising Up, Matt estimated he donates $10,000 a year to local charities and organizations.
The donations are a small thanks to the community that’s entrusted the family business for 51 years, and there’s no sign that another 51 years won’t happen. Matt said the business could expand, but he’s happy and too busy right where he’s at.
“I got my hands full guarding this one,” he said.
