MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It was a good day at the Nike EYBL stop in Memphis for a couple of prospects the University of Louisville has offered.
Playing for the Memphis-based Team Thad squad and in front of a large crowd at the Memphis Sports and Events Center, Jasper Johnson and Labaron Philon put on a show on Saturday afternoon during a win over Vegas Elite in one of the best games of the day.
Johnson, a standout from Woodford County High School, had 21 points, four assists, and three rebounds in 18 minutes, while Philon had 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Team Thad beat Vegas Elite 81-63, pulling away in the final few minutes.
“It was fun to get out here and play with the guys,” Johnson said. “We played hard and with a lot of energy.”
Johnson scored 12 in a row, including three deep three-pointers, during one stretch in the fourth quarter as Team Thad pulled away. He had sat out a few minutes during the second half getting some treatment for cramps in his thigh.
The son of former Kentucky football standout Dennis Johnson, the Class of 2025 has a total of 10 offers on the table, including U of L and UK. Johnson made a visit to the U of L Red-White preseason scrimmage and came back later in the season for a visit. He’s the No. 33 player in the 247Sports rankings of the ’25 class.
The 6-foot-4 Philon is a point guard in the ’24 class and he picked up an offer from U of L in January. He’s the No. 36 player overall in the ’24 class and has 10 total offers. Philon said he would like to make a visit to Louisville at some point.
In the first game of the day, Philon had 22 points, while Johnson had six points and four assists in a 20-point win over Proskills.
Here’s a look at some other U of L targets and how they fared on Saturday (Note: college coaches are not allowed out this weekend):
**U of L’s top target in the ’24 class – Karter Knox – is not playing this weekend with his Florida Rebels team. Here’s a story about Knox narrowing his list to eight schools.
**Super impressed by Wisconsin small forward Kon Knueppel, who says he will make a visit soon to U of L, with his 46 points in two games. A big-time shooter, Knueppel was 12 of 21 – including 6 of 9 on three-pointers – in a 61-60 loss to Meanstreets. He finished with 30 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. In the nightcap, Phenom won the game over Brad Beal Elite with Knueppel getting 18 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, and three steals.
**Loved the versatile play of U of L ’24 target Jalen Shelley. He had 13 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and four blocked shots in a 76-73 over The Skill Factory and then added 17 points, three rebounds, two assists, and two blocked shots in a win over Expressions Elite. Shelley is one of the more versatile players in the ’24 class.
**U of L commitment TJ Robinson didn’t shoot it well and the NJ Scholars lost twice. Robinson was 7 of 13 and had 20 points and three assists in a 65-63 loss to the NW Rotary Rebels, and then he was just 2 of 10 and had five points, and five rebounds in a loss to Team United.
**Robinson’s teammate and top U of L ’24 target Billy Richmond was in foul trouble in the loss to Team United. He had 24 points and seven rebounds but played just 20 minutes. Richmond is one of the best players I saw on the day. He had 15 points and eight rebounds in the earlier loss to NW Rotary Rebels.
**Toledo, Ohio, ’25 shooting guard Jerry Easter had two solid efforts for the All-Ohio 17s team. Eastern was 8 of 21 from the field in the opener and had 22 points, five rebounds, and three assists in a loss to the NY Rens and then he had 27 points, four assists, four steals, and three rebounds in a loss to Team Griffin. Easter is just 3 of 14 from three-point range.
More coming tomorrow. . .
