The University of Louisville football staff held the first prospect camp of the Jeff Brohm era on Wednesday night at the school’s practice complex.
The Cardinals hosted just under 200 prospects at the first of three camps for prospects hoping to get a look from the staff. The next camp will be held on Sunday afternoon before the final camp will be for specialists on June 22.
Here are some highlights from the day:
**Bryan Station safety JT Haskins has been coming to Louisville camps for a few years now but this time was different. He’s now heading into his senior season and he’s gained about 15 pounds. Haskins now looks the part and I would have to imagine the U of L coaches liked what they saw in the one-on-one and skeleton drills. Haskins was solid and the strength showed down the field when he was making plays. He has an offer from Louisville and I would think there could be some talk soon about his future.
**Speaking of the future, don’t look now but there’s another Haskins on the way. Jordan Haskins has stellar ball skills for a prospect just entering high school. He has to be one of the best players statewide in the Class of 2027.
**Male High School defensive back Antonio Harris has to be one of the best players in the state this coming season. Harris is the son of former U of L linebacker Nate Harris and was recently offered by Kentucky. Harris is a guy that will be a really good four-year guy at the next level. He’s a steady, heady player and really good down the field with his eyes.
**Was super impressed with the poise and the down-field accuracy of Cincinnati Mount Healthy 2025 quarterback Jahmeir Spain. He already has a bunch of early offers and has made a ton of visits. Will be exciting to watch this one because he’s talented. He had an outstanding sophomore season where he threw for 2,005 yards, completing 68 percent of his passes with 27 touchdowns.
**There were several other QBs at the camp that I really likes, including Cleveland St. Thomas signal caller Tyler Tusai. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Tusai has an offer on the table from Bowling Green and he threw a nice deep ball. Will need some work on his touch passes, but he has a chance to be a nice mid-plus quarterback.
**Jeffersontown High School tight end Lukus McDaniels has a shot at being a scholarship guy. He’s a Class of 2024 guy and he’s 6-foot-3 and about 250 pounds. Was really good in the tight end drills and athletic enough to go down the field and catch a pass. McDaniels plays all over the field at J’town and is also a basketball player.
**And one more local kid to watch – Fern Creek tight end Patrick Carr. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Carr is a 2025 prospect.
**Tampa, Fla., Jesuit wide receiver SJ Green didn’t look very big – 6-foot, 180 pounds – but he sure played bigger. He went up and got a few balls and really showed his speed. He has an offer from Indiana and several others and also recently visited Duke.
**Cincinnati Withrow defensive edge Erik Gayle landed an offer after his performance, which was perhaps the best of the guys with the lineman groups. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Gayle is long and athletic. He also has offers from Colorado State and Kentucky.
**Fisher, Ind., Hamilton Southeastern offensive lineman Cameron Gorin was clearly one of the best in his group at the camp. He performed at a high level and earned his first Power Five offer following the camp. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Gorin also has offers from Marshall and Ball State and made a visit in March to Purdue. He is the son of former Purdue offensive tackle Brandon Gorin.
**Western Hills High School defensive end Javeon Campbell is an intriguing prospect. The 6-foot-7 Campbell, who is also a basketball player for Western Hills, had made a visit in April. He has also been to Memphis and Tennessee for visits. His lone offer in football is from Eastern Kentucky. He’s a 2025 prospect to keep an eye on for sure.
**Owensboro Catholic quarterback Brady Atwell throws a nice ball. He’s listed at 6-foot-3, and 220 pounds and has the look of what could be a big, strong, drop back and sling it QB at the next level. He’s a member of the Class of 2025 and as a sophomore he threw for 2,743 yards and 30 touchdowns – completing 65 percent of his passes.
**Rochester, Mich., offensive lineman Jacob Kropchak is a nice-looking inside offensive lineman prospect. He’s 6-foot-4 and 290 pounds and is already committed to Toledo. He had an offer from Louisville before he committed to Toledo.
**An intriguing prospect from the offensive line group was Gavin Barton. The 6-foot-5, 290-pound Barton is a Class of 2024 prospect from Jacksonville, Fla., Mandarin High School. He’s only been playing football for a year and a half, was All-District in his first season and really looked like a kid that could develop into a nice lineman. Barton spoke for a while with OL coach Richard Owens after camp.
**Ballard High School wide receiver Maurice Stephens is an intriguing prospect. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound Stephens looks the past and averaged over 10 yards a catch last season. He’ll be one of Ballard’s main weapons this season and was solid in camp. He runs a 4.49 40-yard dash and has really good hands.
**Largo, Fla., Pinellas Park defensive lineman Javon Williams had good burst and agility but is a little small for the Power 5 level in my opinion. He’s 6-foot-2, 270 -pounds and holds 13 total offers.
**Another Bryan Station prospect that looked solid was defensive lineman Gary McCauley. The Class of 2024 prospect is 6-3, 245 and is also a standout wrestler for the Defenders.
**St. Xavier ’24 defensive lineman Ashton Jones is a very impressive athlete in football and track and field. He’s 6-foot-2, and about 265 pounds and already holds nine scholarship offers, including UAB, Army, Navy and four Ivy League schools. He’ll be a very good player at the mid-major level and could end up at a higher level down the road because of his abilities.
**Another St. Xavier prospect is 2025 defensive lineman Erik Ekens, who is super twitchy and athletic. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Ekens runs a 4.7 40-yard dash and has the athletic ability to grow into a Power Five prospect.
**Really impressed by Ryle High School ’25 defensive end Dillon Smith, who had 18.5 sacks and six tackles for a loss last season as a sophomore. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Smith is another to keep a close eye on. He showed he’s close to a Power Five guy with a high motor, quick first step and a body that can handle a lot more weight.
**U of L baseball commitment Kade Elam is a very nice quarterback. In fact, he’s a three-sport star at Corbin. Elam is a pitcher in baseball and really throws a nice ball in football.
