STATESBORO, Ga. – The FGCU men’s golf team posted the fifth-best team round Sunday among the 14-team field at the Schenkel Invitational, improving to ninth place.
FGCU’s one-under 287 team score in round two puts the Eagles ahead of No. 43 Notre Dame by two shots — 587 to 589 — entering Sunday’s final round. The Eagles opened the tournament with a 300.
Tournament host and No.19 Georgia Southern continues to lead the event at 23-under 553 as a team.
“We’ll continue to work towards more consistency as a team with (Sunday’s) opportunity to compete,” said FGCU men’s golf coach Andrew Danna. “I’m really proud of our team. Also, congrats to our women’s basketball program on their exciting First Round victory against Washington State in the NCAA Tournament today. We are looking forward to watching them compete in the Second Round. Wings Up!”
Four out of the five Eagles competing in the Peach State improved upon Friday’s first-round effort.
Junior Austin Cherichella (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona HS) now paces the Eagles starting five, improving by five strokes and surging up the individual leaderboard to tie for 13th.
Cherichella’s three-under 69 in round two helped him climb 21 spots, and marked his team-leading 11th under-par round of the season. Cherichella also cashed in on a par-5 eagle on the eighth hole to highlight his round-two performance.
Fifth-year Jon Hopkins (Bishop’s Stortford, England/Hockerill Anglo-European College/Mississippi Gulf Coast CC) did one better.
Hopkins drilled a hole-in-one on the 130-yard sixth hole — the first ace of the season for FGCU. He also improved the most Saturday among the Eagles, cutting eight strokes from his opening round 78. At four-over 148, Hopkins is tied for 41st.
Georgia Southern’s No. 83 overall Ben Carr leads the tournament field at eight-under 136 after back-to-back rounds of 68.
