CONWAY, S.C. – After a win over Southern Miss in the Sun Belt Conference opener at home on Thursday, March 16, the Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team dropped a home conference contest to Louisiana 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Stevens Tennis Complex in Conway, S.C.
Doubles play was tight on all three courts and set the tone for the entire match, which saw both teams go at it across both sides of the net.
CCU’s team of Ryuya Ata and Guilherme Toresan picked up a 6-2 win over Al Sanchez Gonzalez on court No. 3, only to see Louisiana’s duo of Vasil Dimitrov and Karlo Kajin upend the Chants’ Carlos Berna Ruiz and Maj Tomac 6-2 on court No. 1.
With the doubles point coming down to court No. 2, Louisiana’s tandem of Kacper Dwo and Alejo Ferrer Chueca was able to fight off Coastal’s pair of Lucas Wayenburg and Steve Mundt with a 7-5 tiebreaker win to take the match 7-6.
Down 1-0 in the match, the Chants quickly fell behind 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 loss at the No. 6 singles spot before Ata posted a 6-3, 6-2 straight-set win over Dimitrov on court No. 4 to put the home team down 2-1.
However, the Ragin’ Cajuns would win the next three singles contests in straight sets on courts No. 1-3 to seal the match win and take a 5-1 match lead.
In the final match of the day, the Chants’ Toresan went back and forth with Louisiana’s Calin Postea on court No. 5, going to a 10-point tiebreaker in the third set. After Toresan won the first set 7-5, Postea took the second set 6-3. In the third-set 10-point tiebreaker, Postea held off Toresan 10-7 to pick up the win.
The Chanticleers (10-6, 1-1 SBC) will hit the road for a four-match road trip beginning with Georgia Southern on Saturday, April 1, in Statesboro, Ga.
