Michigan’s is still looking to add players to next season’s men’s basketball roster. The coaching staff has been active in the transfer portal this offseason, and will remain so after a few potential targets reportedly rejected the Wolverines.
So far, Michigan has received commitments from Alabama guard Nimari Burnett and Seton Hall forward Tray Jackson, though the program hasn’t officially announced either player. North Carolina guard Caleb Love also publicly committed to Michigan, only to end up at Arizona due to academic issues.
The roster needed replenishing after three players transferred out, two left for the NBA, and another chose not to pursue a sixth year of eligibility.
As a result, Michigan has three open scholarships for the 2023-24 season and intends to fill them.
Toledo guard RayJ Dennis, the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, was a possibility. He visited campus, but committed to Baylor on June 1. The school announced his signing the next day.
Michigan reportedly hosted Tennessee forward Olivier Nkamhoua last weekend. Michigan had been involved with him for at least a few weeks. On Monday, reports, including one from On3′s Joe Tipton, indicated Nkamhoua had narrowed his options to Baylor and West Virginia.
When UC Riverside guard Zyon Pullin announced his top five transfer possibilities on Wednesday, Michigan was one of them. ESPN’s Jeff Borzello reported on Monday that Pullin had trimmed that list to two: Florida and LSU.
It leaves head coach Juwan Howard and his staff with work to do. Michigan, which went 18-16 and lost in the second round of the NIT last season, lost its top three scorers, its top three 3-point shooters, and has just one center on the roster.
Michigan assistant coach Phil Martelli told MLive in mid-May, after Love’s decommitment, that the program was not done adding players. “If it’s a rock in Europe, then we’re going to kick that rock,” he said. “All these kids can’t come out of the (NBA) draft and go back to their original schools. Who’s among that group?”
Dennis, Nkamhoua, and Pullin were among that group, but appear to be headed elsewhere. Michigan’s search continues.
