HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall football greats Randy Moss and Chris Parker are on the ballot for the 2024 College Football Hall of Fame, the National Football Foundation announced on Monday.
Moss and Parker were both listed on the 2024 Divisional Player Candidate list, which was due to their careers starting when Marshall was a member of Division I-AA (now FCS).
“What an incredible honor for Marshall to have multiple representatives on the most prestigious list in college football,” Marshall Director of Athletics Christian Spears said. “Having two players as nominees not only speaks to the success and respect of Marshall’s football program, but also to the impact those players had on college football. We applaud Randy and Chris for their accomplishments while representing the Thundering Herd and thank the National Football Foundation for recognizing them on the grandest scale, as well.
“Obviously, we recently nominated Randy and are thrilled for this enormous recognition for his remarkable accomplishments while at Marshall. The previous nomination of Chris Parker continues to bring Marshall enormous pride. It is our hope the voters will recognize his contributions to college football as well.”
National Football Foundation President and CEO Steve Hatchell spoke to the exclusivity of being named as a nominee.
“It’s an enormous honor to just be on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot, considering more than 5.62 million people have played college football and only 1,074 players have been inducted,” said National Football Foundation President and CEO Steve Hatchell. “The Hall’s requirement of being a First-Team All-American creates a much smaller pool of about 1,500 individuals who are even eligible. Being in today’s elite group means an individual is truly among the greatest to have ever played the game.”
Moss is making his first appearance on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot after being nominated by Marshall earlier this year.
In his two seasons at Marshall, Moss rewrote the Marshall and college football record books, catching 174 passes for 3,529 yards and 54 touchdowns before going on to be one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history.
His first season at Marshall helped lead Marshall to a Division I-AA Championship in the program’s final season at the level. Moss caught 78 passes for 1,709 yards and 28 touchdowns. He was a two-time All-American in 1996 as a wide receiver and kick returner.
Moss highlighted Marshall’s 49-29 win in the I-AA Championship, catching nine passes for 220 yards and four touchdowns as the Thundering Herd left the division at the top of the heap.
That springboarded Marshall into the 1997 season – their first at the I-A level – in which Moss continued to prove unstoppable. Moss caught 96 passes for 1,820 yards with 26 touchdown receptions en route to being a unanimous All-American, Biletnikoff Award winner and Heisman Trophy finalist.
During his two seasons with the Herd, Marshall went 25-3 overall and scored a touchdown pass in all 28 games that he suited up for the team.
Parker, who has been a fixture on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot for several years, proved to be a dominant force in Marshall’s ground success in the early 1990s.
The all-time rushing leader in Marshall history, Parker’s four-year career produced 5,931 yards with 68 touchdowns – also a Marshall rushing record.
Parker was the model of consistency for the Thundering Herd, rushing for at least 1,700 yards in each of his final three seasons while also being a key contributor as a freshman to Marshall’s 1992 I-AA National Championship team.
The Marshall Hall of Famer eclipsed the 100-yard mark in 31 games in his career and had at least 150 yards in 14 contests. Parker eclipsed the 200-yard mark on two occasions – both of which came in 1993 (209 yards vs. Chattanooga, 203 yards against ETSU).
Marshall went a combined 47-12 during his four-year career with a I-AA National Championship (1992) and two I-AA National Runner-Up finishes (1993, 1995).
Ballots for the 2024 College Football Hall of Fame were E-mailed to the 12,000 National Football Foundation members and Hall of Famers whose votes will be tabulated and sent to the NFF’s Honors Court, chaired by College Football Hall of Famer Archie Griffin. The Honors Couty, which includes a diverse pool of athletics administrators, Hall of Famers and media members, will deliberate and select the class.
The 2024 College Football Hall of Fame Class will be announced in early 2024. More specific details will be released in the future.
The 2024 College Football Hall of Fame Class will be officially inducted during the 66th Annual NFF Awards Dinner, presented by Las Vegas, on Dec. 10, 2024, while also being immortalized at the Chick-Fil-A College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
Honorees will also be recognized at their respective schools with an NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute, presented by Fidelity Investments, during the 2024 season.
