Newcastle United will trial safe standing at St James’ Park from the start of next season.
A designated section holding approximately 1800 supporters will be installed in the south-east corner of the stadium, between the Gallowgate End and East Stand. A smaller area will also be created for away supporters in the upper tier of the Leazes End.
Standing had been banned in 1994 in response to the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, where 97 Liverpool fans were unlawfully killed.
However, after numerous trials, the government reintroduced standing areas last July, with the approval of the Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA).
In the Premier League, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Wolves, and Brentford have safe standing at their stadiums, with Spurs the first side to trial it during the second half of the 2021-22 season.
UEFA, meanwhile, announced a trial for safe standing at men’s matches in its competitions at the start of this season, although only clubs in England, Germany and France have been able to participate.
Newcastle surveyed over 4000 fans to discuss the proposals, with 75 per cent in favour of safe standing.
Supporters with tickets in the affected section will be given the opportunity to opt out of the trial.
Newcastle return to Premier League action on Sunday, April 2, when they host Manchester United in a rematch of February’s Carabao Cup final, which they lost 2-0. Eddie Howe’s side are fifth in the Premier League, three points behind the visitors in third.
