As fans debate the top 2023 quarterback prospects, some teams already have their eyes on 2024.
Top prospects Caleb Williams and Drake Maye could be good enough for organizations to skip the position this year and focus on next offseason.
“So many scouts are already enamored with those two prospects, and I do think there’s some truth to the idea that some teams are looking at where they are drafting in 2023, then looking at the caliber of QBs available next April and ultimately opting to wait until 2024,” Matt Miller of ESPN reported.
There is no clear cut top quarterback in the 2023 class, with C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young and Anthony Richardson all potentially going to the Carolina Panthers at No. 1 overall. However, most agree there is a clear divide after the top four, including Will Levis.
Bleacher Report’s Scouting Department lists four quarterbacks inside the top 21 overall in the class, but there’s a steep drop to Stanford’s Tanner McKee at No. 78.
Teams that need a new franchise quarterback but don’t have a pick inside the top 10—like the Washington Commanders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Minnesota Vikings—might pass on adding any quarterback in this year’s draft. Even the Las Vegas Raiders at No. 7 might be too late to get one of the top four prospects.
Williams has a chance to be better than any prospect in the 2023 class anyway after winning the Heisman Trophy this past year at USC. The Oklahoma transfer finished the 2022 season with 4,537 passing yards, 42 touchdowns and just five interceptions, adding 382 yards and 10 scores on the ground.
The dual-threat ability and pure passing talent could have teams tanking for the chance to draft him in 2024.
Maye has also impressed after totaling 38 passing touchdowns and seven rushing touchdowns last year at North Carolina. The 6’5″ quarterback has the size teams love at the position, and he could make a quick transition to the next level.
Front offices could be taking the long-term approach by punting on 2023 and getting a true superstar in 2024.
