Nick Kyrgios is willing to do an exhibition with Roger Federer in Switzerland. Six years ago, Kyrgios and Federer delivered an absolute classic at the 2017 Miami Masters. After over three hours of play, Federer edged out Kyrgios 7-6 (9) 6-7 (9) 7-6 (5) to reach the Miami final.
That match is widely considered one of the most thrilling best-of-three-set matches in the 21st century. On his Instagram Story, Kyrgios shared a video from the 2017 Miami match and asked Federer: “Exhibition in Switzerland? @rogerfederer shall we do it again?”
When Kyrgios and Federer met for the first time at the 2015 Madrid Masters, the Australian clinched an upset win over the Swiss.
In their next six matches, Federer earned as many wins. Earlier this year, Kyrgios got straight honest when asked about Federer, saying the Swiss “had the ability to make you feel like s— on the court.” “I think when it’s all said and done Novak will be the GOAT, but I think without Federer there is no Nadal, no Djokovic, he bought so many fans to tennis.
Nadal and Djokovic will let you work your way into the match a bit more, with your groundstrokes and stuff, but Federer can just make you feel like pure s—, makes the court look so small. If it’s purely tennis related I’d say Novak, but if it’s more than an athlete I’d say Federer,” Kyrgios said on The JBK Show.
Even though Kyrgios never beat Federer again after the 2015 Madrid Masters, the Swiss never had an easy job against the Australian. In those six matches Federer won against Kyrgios, in four matches there was a deciding set while in just two matches the Swiss was able to win in straight sets. The last match between Kyrgios and Federer came at the 2019 Laver Cup.
