Marvin Harrison Jr. will certainly be the top pass-catching option for Ohio State football next season. With Jaxon Smith-Njigba soon joining Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave as a first-round pick in the NFL draft, though, it seems the Buckeyes might have already found another star wideout to put next to college football’s best returning receiver.
True freshman wide receiver Carnell Tate turned heads on Saturday during Ohio State’s student appreciation practice, even getting most of his reps with presumptive starting quarterback Kyle McCord and the Buckeyes first-team offense.
“Early enrollee freshman wide receiver Carnell Tate stood out during Ohio State’s Student Appreciation Day practice, taking first-team reps and making several impressive catches along the sideline in 11-on-11s and 7-on-7s,” Joey Kaufman of The Columbus Dispatch reported.
Tate was the third-ranked wideout and 22nd-ranked player overall in the High School Class of 2023, according to 247 Sports. The Chicago native attended Florida’s IMG Academy, enrolling early at Ohio State in January for the second semester and spring football.
It’s not hard to see why the 6’2, 180-pound Tate is primed for big things come the fall. A savvy route-runner with solid all-around physical tools, he looked plenty ready during Saturday’s scrimmage to step on the field for head coach Ryan Day next season.

Harrison is a potential Heisman candidate in 2023, and success of the Buckeyes’ offense will depend most on how McCord acclimates in his first year as a starter after previously backing up potential No. 1 overall draft pick C.J. Stroud. But Tate becoming a household name would go a long way toward Ohio State becoming a clear-cut national title favorite. Needless to say, the early returns on that possibility are very encouraging.
