Dermot Weld’s runners have been performing below market expectations for some time now and, since the beginning of 2016, he’s won with just 388 of his 2882 representatives (13.5% strike-rate) for a huge loss of £901.60 to a £1 level stake at SP (-31.3% on turnover). The expected number of winners was 424.31)=. His strike-rate dropped to 7.8% last year and it’s still below average in 2023. CHRIS HAYES rides two of the Weld runners today – newcomer Blue Poppy, a 7-2 chance in the opener (1.35), and Livio Milo, a 4-1 shot in the 1m maiden for older horses (3.37) – and it could be worth fielding against the jockey this afternoon, with a view to trading out before the 4.07 in which he rides FERRYBANK, well drawn in stall 1 on yesterday’s evidence and a player if reverting to the positive tactics that have served him well in the past (he caught the eye from off the pace on his reappearance).
