American tennis star Jessica Pegula has vowed to share less tennis content on social media after posting pictures of herself playing golf, working out, and spending time with her pet dogs. Pegula, also known as the richest tennis player in the world, suggested that she wanted to share some non-tennis moments from her life with fans and followers.
The world No 3 bowed out of the fourth round at Indian Wells last week, losing to two-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova in a three-set thriller that was one of the best matches of the season so far.
Pegula has been in good form, reaching at least the quarter-finals in three of her four tournaments so far this season. She also won the United Cup with Team USA, but will now aim to go all the way to the title in Miami.
Ahead of the Miami Open, Pegula seemed to have taken some time off to recharge her batteries, during which she also played a spot of golf.
The 29-year-old took to Instagram on Monday evening, as she penned: “Trying to post more non tennis content.” In the snaps, the New York native can be seen going about her everyday life – including spending quality time with her pet pooches.
The third seed will begin her Miami campaign against either Canadian Katherine Sebov or rising Czech star Linda Fruhvirtova. She could then face fellow American and 2022 Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins in the third round, before a potential 2023 Australian Open quarter-finals re-match against Victoria Azarenka in the fourth round.
When it comes to the future of the WTA Tour, Pegula believes that securing equal prize money across all levels of events is something worth fighting for. Intriguingly, Pegula’s net worth is higher than Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic combined as her father is Terry Pegula, the world’s 434th richest person who has made a £3.23bn fortune from natural gas development.
Tennis has made significant strides in the last half-century, gaining equal prize money at all four Grand Slams and leading the way as the women’s sport that produces the most recognised and well-compensated female athletes in the world.
In 2019, Forbes published a list of the highest-paid athletes in the world and Serena Williams was the only woman to make it into the top 100 – something that Pegula wants to see the end of.
She said: “I hope obviously we can keep pushing for equal prize money at all events. Being on TV more. I feel like as far as me being on player council, we already tried to do a lot of that.
“I think we’re starting to see slowly, more of it, especially with United Cup, the response of everyone wanting to see men and women playing on the same court, on the same team.”
