The Colorado Buffaloes dropped a vital game early in the season against the Nebraska Cornhuskers this weekend, losing 28-10 on the road. The Buffaloes struggled in all phases of the game, as it was an ugly outing from start to finish.
Nebraska dominated in all three phases, especially in getting to the quarterback. Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders struggled to get away from the pass rush, and his frustration boiled over after the game.
However, that backfired on him. Instead of taking accountability for the loss and playing the role of team leader, he threw shade at his offensive line. Sanders showed his immaturity after the loss to the Cornhuskers.
“How many times did [Nebraska quarterback Dylan] Raiola get touched?,” Sanders said. “Of course, whenever you are able to run the ball consistently and whenever you’re able to, it opens up the pass. But it’s like, you got to understand like what your team good at. So, it was like, why would we keep running the ball if we are out there and we get in a situation where it’s a must-get and we don’t get it?”
Not only was it a bad look for Sanders and the Buffaloes, but it didn’t sit well with NFL executives. Two NFL executives spoke to The Athletic’s Mike Sando and ripped Sanders and his father, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, on how he handled the loss on Saturday.
“Now, he looks like a guy who lacks detail, his hard-edged style is running people out of there and he is just really promoting his son,” one said.
Another said that Colorado was sloppy from the start of the game.
“There is nothing wrong with what we said last year, that he tells the truth and connects with players,” the second executive said. “But there’s a lot more that goes into it than connecting with the players and telling the truth to the media about the state of college athletics. A lot more goes into winning, like blocking and tackling and protecting the passer and having the quarterback not scramble so frequently that everything is off timing.”
Sanders, the quarterback, is projected to be a top-10 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. On Saturday, he completed 23 of 38 passes for 244 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He was sacked five times.
It’s a bad look to throw the blame at your teammates when you’re considered the leader of the team. With all the hype surrounding Colorado, they don’t seem to have the horses to back that up.
