Local youth wrestler Taylor Bell achieved the rare distinction of winning three state championships in the girls 12-and-under division, known as youth wrestling’s “triple crown” of victories.
Bell took first in three different events in the u-12 age group and 85 pound weight class. She first won the championship in folkstyle wrestling, which is equivalent to high school or collegiate rules. That was her second consecutive state title in the folkstyle event. She followed that up with a victory in the Greco-Roman championships before eventually finishing the triple crown with a championship win in the freestyle category. Freestyle and Greco-Roman are generally the Olympic categories for wrestling and are similar to one another with the main difference being that Greco-Roman doesn’t permit leg attacks or other scoring below the waist.
“(Taylor) set a goal out like four or five months ago when she won folkstyle state,” said Taylor’s father and coach, Cass Bell. “After she won (Greco-Roman), we’re like, ‘Hey, you’ve got a shot to go for the triple crown.’ ”
The younger Bell delivered once more, securing the girls triple crown for all three events. Taylor also won the boys division state championship in the freestyle competition in Fresno, making her champion for both boys and girls in that category.
The accomplishment highlighted the successes for the local competitors at the state event as several youth athletes placed in the top five. Brooklyn Hines also got second place in the girls 110-pound weight class for the u-10 division.
On the boys side, Jackson Hicks took second in the u-14 boys 149-pound weight class in his first event in several years. Branson Hunter took fourth in the u-14 102-pound while Jeremy Sanders Jr. got fifth in the u-8 boys 70-pound weight class. Taylor’s older brother, Kaidan Bell, returned from injury to place fifth.
The Humboldt County Law Enforcement Torch Run will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Eureka. This year marks the 26th anniversary of the Law Enforcement Torch Run in Northern California.
The event will begin on Wednesday morning at the Adorni Center outdoor amphitheater and will proceed through Old Town before concluding at the Coast Guard Plaza. The event is the largest public awareness and grass-root fundraising effort for Special Olympics.
The event is in conjunction with Humboldt County law enforcement, which supports the efforts of Special Olympics to deliver essential health, wellness and sports programs. The organization also works to promote social inclusion to end bullying and discrimination; and to join people with and without disabilities together to compete as teammates in Unified Sports.
Among the changeover from the Cal Poly Humboldt men’s basketball team are several players who have moved on to find new homes. Standout forwards Bryce Mitchell and Brandon Porter will be joining CCAA programs Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona.
Porter and Mitchell were both key players on last year’s Lumberjack team and will be difficult to replace. The two forwards were both two-way players that had key impacts on the game offensively and defensively. Porter averaged 7.3 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per game in 18 appearances after he joined the ‘Jacks midway through the season. The 6-foot-9 forward will now join a Pomona team that has been a consistent contender over the past two decades under coach Greg Kamansky.
Mitchell averaged 5.4 points per game this past season, playing a different role for the team than he had the previous year when he started all 23 games that he played and averaged 7.7 points per game along with 4.8 rebounds per game. That first season demonstrated his upside as an athletic wing that can defend all five positions. Mitchell will now join the reigning conference champs San Bernardino as the team looks to retool under new head coach Gus Argenal.
