The Michael J. Vecsi Memorial Foundation 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament? It’s become a rite of spring, if not early summer.
The 5th annual tourney that’s played in honor of the former Moore Catholic basketball player and FDNY lieutenant is scheduled for June 10 and, in many ways, it represents something Vecsi would have fully supported.
“I feel this is the type of event that he would have definitely participated in himself,’’ said Vecsi’s wife, the former Joanne Wicinski. “We want to continue doing this in his honor because basketball and the fire department were two things he really loved, something that’s really special.’’
Vecsi, the former St. Teresa’s, Moore and Baruch College student, passed away at the age of 42 following a courageous battle with lung cancer in September of 2014.
He was born on Feb. 19, 1972, graduated from Moore in 1990 and joined the FDNY in January of 2003. The Vecsis became the proud parents of twins Michael and Katelyn on August 31, 2005.
The one-time CYO coach who helped run youth basketball clinics at St. Teresa’s was promoted to lieutenant in April of 2011 and just under three years later, he was diagnosed with job-related, stage 4 lung cancer.

Once again, the 3-on-3 hoops tourney will take place at Moore’s Graniteville complex and will primarily consist of FDNY members. It’s scheduled to take place between 10 a.m,-4 p.m.
Bounce houses, food, a beer truck and DJ will be on hand for entertainment. There’ll be a 50-50 and a few raffles as well.
Once again, funds raised will go toward a scholarship for an incoming Moore Catholic student. Joanne said the scholarship amounts to a total of $6,000 over the student’s four years.
Friends, Moore alumni, members of the FDNY and the like are encouraged to attend. For more information or to make a donation toward this worthy cause, please call Joanne at 718-809-1789 or search https://www.vecsifoundation.org/.
