While it might seem simple, the art of shopping for the best everyday handbags can be challenging to master. An item that’s functional and easily holds all of the essentials is non-negotiable, plus—if you ask us—it needs to be undeniably beautiful and versatile enough to seamlessly style with several outfits.
As Vogue editors, we’re constantly looking forward to discovering what’s new in the fashion world. But every now and then, we’ll come across an item that’s so good, we decide to make it a part of our daily wardrobes.
Ahead, we’ve asked 20 Vogue editors from around the globe to find out which handbags they’d gladly wear everyday. While we all have unique personal styles, there’s one thing that we all have in common: We can’t say no to expertly crafted details. From Khaite’s minimalist-approved totes to Loewe’s artful silhouettes, discover the everyday handbags Vogue editors love below.
My ideal day bag is something small enough to fit under the arm with an adjustable strap or chain that can either be a shoulder bag or crossbody. I find this sort of style gets me throughout my day easily, and has enough room to include my essentials without being cumbersome to bring to a cocktail party, should I not have time to switch before evening. I have a tweed Proenza style that has been a staple for years and ticks every box.
I wish I was that person that could carry small bags but sadly I’m not. I always have my wallet, my makeup, a book, chargers, headphones, so [it’s] impossible. I have been really into brown lately and fell in love with this Prada brown ombre bag—it feels like a great neutral for fall.
My new fall go-to bag has been the Coach pillow Tabby in ivory. I selfishly love it because the “C” can also stand for “Christian” — but I also love how plushy and roomy it is for a shoulder bag. I’ve also been wearing it crossbody to work everyday, and it fits all my daily essentials (work pass, AirPods, wallet, keys).
There’s no denying my love of Khaite’s caramel leather envelope tote. It’s elegant, timeless, and goes with everything in my wardrobe. It’s one of the best investment buys I’ve made.
On most days, you’ll find me toting my jumbo half moon bag by Alaïa. The crescent-shaped bag is super sleek and matches with the majority of my outfits, plus it’s large enough to fit my laptop, which is perfect when I’m running from the office to market appointments.
I got this Tory Burch tote as a college graduation gift about two years ago, and it’s been my go-to work bag ever since. There’s enough room to store my laptop, planner, and notebook in the side compartments; and the middle pocket normally holds my wallet, keys, water bottle, and some snacks. Plus, the color matches perfectly with basically any outfit—no matter the season.
After many years of wearing only mini and small sized bags, I’ve finally upgraded to something that’s more substantial in size. I’ll admit, I scored this perfect sized Loewe shoulder bag off The RealReal, and it’s quickly become my everyday carry. When I want something with a bit more structure, I’ll grab Wandler’s Penelope bag.
I rely on a Mary Poppins tote to get me through the day. I love this Chloé Edith bag because it’s big but easy to carry. I’ve had mine for a little while now, and the leather wears in super nicely so it looks better and better with time (and isn’t too precious!).
I have this in solid navy, very chic. It has an attached keychain, which is very helpful. And Rothy’s has repurposed more than 493,000 pounds of ocean-bound marine plastic, by using it to knit their bags and other accessories. Kudos.
Staud’s Bean Bag is currently my favorite wear-with-anything handbag. It’s the perfect size to carry my essentials (phone, card holder, lip gloss, and hand sanitizer!), offers a detachable strap to carry as a clutch or over-the-shoulder, and is embellishment-free so I don’t have to worry about it clashing with other accessories. It’s become a closet staple to say the least.
Heading into the office on a daily basis has certainly changed my idea of an “everyday bag.” What was once a mini Vuitton crossbody has quickly transformed into a Khaite tote, with ample space to hold my everyday essentials. And while the black leather certainly means business, the quilted texture adds enough play to take this bag into the night.
I’m actually on the hunt for a new day bag. I have been carrying around a medium orange Telfar since the pandemic began and recently decided I needed something new. I want something sleek that can fit my computer in a pinch and was looking at vintage Proenza Schouler PS1’s on The RealReal. One recently came up in that fantastic crowd mosaic print they did for spring 2013, and I stupidly didn’t purchase it right away, which I’ve regretted ever since. They recently released a special limited edition collection, and I must say, this “faded turquoise” suede one is very nice.
I use handbags as an opportunity to add playful elements to my personal style. I prefer vintage shoulder bag styles because I love the hunt and finding a piece that personally resonates with me and maintains my individuality. My go-to everyday handbag is a red Gucci Jackie O Hobo with black leather trimming. I love playful colors paired with black leather trimming and unique metal closure. The material is durable, so I don’t feel the need to be overly precious with it. While the bag looks small, I can stuff a full makeup pouch inside for touch-ups and more. My bag is from @treasuresofnyc, but you can find a similar style of Jackie O anywhere. After all, finding your favorite colorway is half the fun!
In general, I think that bags are a very personal accessory—like perfumes. Taking the time to look for one that suits your personality and lifestyle best is totally worth it. I love interesting details and pops of color—like the bright orange of the Loewe-puzzle bag (mini size). My wishlist at the moment includes the “the saddle” from Berlin designer Agnes Nordenholz and the lovely Llinera Suede from the Spanish brand Hereu.
For carrying my everyday essentials from point A to point B, I grab my green rattan tote by Clare V. This simple style fits everything I need without feeling too bulky. The shoulder strap is also a game-changer for working on-the-go.
My favorite bag is this classic mini leather bucket bag from Mansur Gavriel in Raspberry Pink. Although small in size, it is still big enough to house all my personal stuff like keys, mobile, and wallet. Plus, it is easy to carry and draws attention by its unconventional shape and color. So if you are contemplating what your next investment piece could be, this one is definitely a fun design to have.
A few years ago a friend told me to check out bags from the brand Florist, and since acquiring one, it’s become my go-to schlep-all when I want to use a canvas tote but need something a little more polished. The leather has softened beautifully over time. It fits a book, a water bottle, and all other necessary purse-detritus. And it gets unsolicited compliments from both downtown cool kids and uptown Birkin-toting moms. It’s a win-win-win situation, you know? I recommend getting one with both a crossbody strap and handles for maximal versatility.
I am a fan of small bags that are easy to carry around. This glossy leather bag imitating tortoiseshell is one of my winter obsessions. I also love that it is signed by Amélie Pichard, a friend and designer committed to a responsible and human approach to fashion.
With my other handbags, I find that I have to be very gentle and careful. But I find the Balenciaga bag very durable, so my mind is put to ease even when the occasional rain gets on the bag. Plus, as all the It girls who’ve carried the bag have proven, a little wear and tear make it look even better.
This is more of a “duffle bag” than a “handbag”, but I use it constantly and lug it to enough inappropriate occasions that I think it qualifies: the Phoenix General duffel in neon orange. I travel a lot, and this bag is bright and cheerful enough to perk me up when I see it at baggage claim while also being roomy and practical enough to lug whatever I need for a day in a new city. Is it subtle? No, but who needs subtlety?
