Why we’re excited: DC’s newest landmark, The Wharf is an impressive sprawl of restaurants, shops, parks and outdoor venues along the Potomac River, and this new Pendry brings that blend of modern design with old world touches that feels especially right for the moment, and especially right for DC. With 131 guest rooms, including 38 spacious suites, the hotel offers an impressive pool deck that is sure to become one of DC’s most desirable ways to beat the heat next summer. And in a city that has no shortage of excellent dining, the Pendry will make a name for itself, with DC hospitality veteran Barry Koslow (who formerly ran the food and beverage program at the Watergate Hotel) at the helm of: a rooftop Japanese restaurant, Moonraker; a poolside Latin-influenced small plates and tasting menu restaurant, Flora Flora; and a sexy lobby-level cocktail den. Bon appétit.
Where it’s located: Think of this as a glamping experience in the heart of one of the South’s most exciting urban destinations—it’s all the comforts of home, located in the buzzy River Arts District of Asheville, North Carolina, but nestled on a quiet, wooded stretch of the French Broad River.
Why we’re excited: It’s not everyday that an outdoor-centric lodge opens up in a city. Founded by two former river guides, this urban A-frame “campground” sits right across the street from the Greenway River Trail and the French Broad River, making it convenient to access Asheville’s best restaurants, galleries and shops, but also making it a secluded spot from which to access the river for paddling, or simply to kick back and enjoy some quiet R&R. Of course, a hotel founded by outdoor guides is going to have a solid offering of experiences, and the dance card of options here ranges from, obviously, paddling and water sports, but also things like voluntourism opportunities for guests to learn more bout the Asheville community, forest bathing, yoga, hiking, biking, and Jeep tours of the historic Blue Ridge Parkway. The food program, too, is nothing to shake a stick at—James Beard semifinalist Ashley Capps and partner Travis Schultz keep the grab-and-go “Canteen” concept stocked with seasonal, locally-sourced food and craft beverages.
Where it’s located: In the historic Bank of Italy building, in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, just a few blocks south of The Broad, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and The Grand, the glitzy new Frank Gehry-designed The Grand development.
Why we’re excited: When it comes to LA, we’ve seen the ultra sleek indoor-outdoor spaces, we’ve seen the mid-century modern spots, we’ve seen the sceney pool decks with VIP areas and bouncers—but this cozy new spot proposes a different vision of LA style, one that pays homage to the premises’ historic Bank of Italy building. The guest rooms are finished in soothing neutrals accented with blue and gold notes drawn from the lobby’s Italianate ceiling, and touches like Bellino bed linens and pedestal bathtubs encourage a slower, more relaxed take on DTLA. The dolce vita vibes continue up on the sun-drenched rooftop pool deck, where a truly encyclopedic wine list and Mediterranean small plates make for a poolside experience as tasty as it is relaxing—and not a single velvet rope in sight.
Where it’s located: In the South of Tulum—an area that feels a universe away from the partying crowds and ruins-visiting tourists—in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere, the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean.
Why we’re excited: Is there a time and a place for beachfront raves that go until sunrise? Of course! Just don’t expect to encounter any of that at Casa Chablé, the latest offering from eco-conscious, wellness-centric Mexican brand Chablé Hotels. Yoga classes for every level, Ayurvedic treatments, a gorgeous spa, cooking classes and tequila tastings, star gazing, cenote explorations—everything you’d expect from a luxury Quintana Roo experience is here. The property (which has only five rooms in the Main House, and five villas) does a great job of letting nature do most of the talking. It’s location in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere, which protects some 1.6 million acres of wide white sand beaches, mangrove forests, and secluded inlets, is nothing short of spectacular.
