ORLANDO, FLORIDA – Members of the First Academy girls’ golf team are Royals on the course – again.
Led by the sensational play of sophomore Mi Li, who won medalist honors with a blistering 5-under-par 66, TFA won the Class 1A state championship on Saturday at Mission Inn and Resort’s Las Colinas course at Howey-in-the-Hills. The Royals shot a four-person, 18-hole stroke play score of 286 to clip Circle Christian of Orlando (289).
It was TFA’s second state title in three years and fourth overall since 2017. It also gave Central Florida its 13th consecutive state girls’ championship in the FHSAA’s smallest classification.
“Thrilled to add to our long tradition of golf excellence,” said TFA sports director Bo Burgess. “The girls performed so well. They were so humble in victory, giving all the glory to Jesus Christ.
“We have a very young team (four sophomores and one freshman), so we are obviously very excited to build on this moving forward,” Burgess said. “Coach (Victoria) Tanco is in her second year and she has done an incredible job working with this group.”
The title was nothing new to Li, however. Last year, she helped Windermere Prep win the Class 1A state golf championship. She transferred to TFA this year, and beat out FAU High School’s Amelie Phung (68) for the state championship.
Li got able support from Youyang Li (70), who finished tied for third; Angela Wang (74), who placed in a tie for 20th; and Sophia Hong (76), who tied for 29th, to help TFA win the team title.
In the 1A state boys’ tournament, FAU High School of Boca Raton supplanted Bradenton St. Stephen’s Episcopal as state champ (294). Jacksonville Episcopal School (304) and Sarasota Cardinal Mooney (307) finished second and third, respectively.
FAU made it a clean sweep when Jack Quinn shot a 2-under-par 70 to win medalist honors. He edged four golfers who tied for second (71).
Also for FAU, Mateo Desmond finished tied for ninth (73); Jake Manelas, tied for 12th (74); and Vasili Gianakas, tied for 25th (77).
The Class 2A state girls’ and boys’ championships will be held Tuesday and Wednesday at the same venue.
