Indian shooter Sift Kaur Samra rewrote history as she smashed the Asian Games, Asian, and World Records and clinched gold in the Women’s 50m rifle 3 positions event during Day Four of the Asian Games 2022 held in Hangzhou. This victory marked India’s first individual gold at the 2022 edition of the Games and their fifth gold medal overall. The prior four gold medals had been won in various team events, in shooting, women’s cricket, and equestrian sports. Ashi Chouksey, another Indian athlete who was in contention in the same event, clinched the bronze medal.
The 22-year-old shooter Sift Kaur Samra, who is a first-year MBBS student at the GGS Medical College, Punjab, achieved a total score of 469.6, surpassing the previous world record held by Seonaid McIntosh earlier in the year in Baku by 2.6 points. Sift’s performance was so dominant that the silver medalist, China’s Qiongyue Zhang, managed a total score of 462.3 and trailed the Indian shooter by 7.3 points.
