WOOD RIVER – Meghan Cunningham, of Wood River, is eager to get a leg up in a national health and fitness competition.
Cunningham is currently in the running for Ms. Health & Fitness. The winner of this competition will be featured on the magazine of Muscle and Fitness Hers and take home $20,000.
Originally from New Mexico, Cunningham and her family moved to Wood River when she was five. She said she has always been exercising a little since high school, but in the last few years she decided to do more.
“Joined circuit training at my local gym (Pride Fitness),” Cunningham said. “I started lifting weights and doing crazy things I never though I would do like deadlifts. It helped with my mental space.”
She decided to join the competition after coming across a sponsored ad for it several times.
“I feel I am at my strongest and healthiest point in my life and wanted to try something out of my comfort zone,” she said.
In the competition, Cunningham is currently third in the group finals. Following the group finals will be four additional rounds: the wildcard round,
the quarter finals, the semi-finals and the finals.
“I would say the hardest part is finding people to vote,” she said. “I do not have a huge following and this contest is based on the people’s votes.”
While she said she does not have a huge following, the following she does have has been amazing.
“I’ve posted in our fitness club group from the gym and they’ve all been supportive,” she said.
People vote online for contestants to move ahead. To vote for Cunningham, visit https://mshealthandfitness.com/2023/meghan-cun. Each person can vote once every 24 hours for free or pay $1 for two votes a day. The voting for the group finals ends Thursday, June 8.
Cunningham said that claiming this title would “mean the world”.
“Just being a small town girl and getting that recognition nationwide means everything,” she said. “Once you win this, you’re basically everywhere. Even if I get so close to winning, my mind would be blown.”
If she wins the $20,000, Cunningham said she would donate the prize to a women’s shelter for self defense and local animal shelters.
