Timeform’s pace predictor is ‘strong’ here, thanks primarily to the presence of Birkie Boy, Tres Chic and Majolica, which should suit the free-going ANGLESEY LAD. He has plenty of dash and could open his account dropped in trip after an encouraging comeback at Wolverhampton. Joint top-weights It’s Showtime and Forever Eighteen are a couple of the other likely players.
STAR ANTHEM is related to plenty of juvenile winners and he showed more than enough himself when second on debut at Newbury recently to suggest he’ll be winning sooner rather than later. He represents last year’s winning stable and this looks a good opening. The 250,000 guineas Blue Point colt Siegen, in particular, and Red Sand, who is related to plenty of winners (albeit over further), are the most interesting newcomers.
SISTERS IN THE SKY struggled from marks in the 60s on turf last year but she’s tumbled down the weights over the winter so gets the nod to regain the winning thread dropped back to the minimum trip. She represents the stable that has won the last two renewals (with Symbol of Hope who reopposes for her new yard) and is preferred to Joy Choi, who should come on appreciably from her recent course return. Profit And Loss had made a solid start for George Baker so completes the shortlist.
The in-form CIOTOG arrives in good heart having been placed on all three starts this year, caught further back than ideal when third at Wolverhampton last time, so he could be ready to add a third course success to his tally. The hat-trick seeking Afloat isn’t taken lightly on her reappearance, though her wins have come at a very different course, with top-weight Midsummer Music completing the shortlist following a wind op. Any market support for Carp Kid or Gallimus should be noted on their return to action.
The well-bred FLEURIR didn’t need to advance her form when getting off the mark at Pontefract last September and this looks a good opportunity for Roger Varian’s four-year-old to follow up now starting her 2024 campaign. Second choice is Signcastle City, who offered something to work on at Chelmsford recently (keeping on when short of room late on) having fallen in the weights during the second half of last year. Ring of Light missed all of 2023 but shaped as if retaining his ability when fifth to Perseverants at Windsor last time and joins the Brighton winner Lunatick, who should appreciate the return to a sounder surface, on the shortlist.
Making his first start on turf for his current yard, AMERIGO VESPUCCI showed improved form in first-time cheekpieces when battling well for success at Yarmouth 13 days ago and he can score again now that he’s up and running. Newfangled also took his form up a notch on his return and could be the main danger, ahead of Beach Point who should come on for his outing at Kempton last month. Clear Justice has run well at Brighton before and represents last year’s winning yard so any market support would look significant.
After six months off, ANDROMEDAS KINGDOM made it two wins from her last three starts when successful over C&D eight days ago and a penalty might not be enough to prevent her from following up. Fellow C&D winner Moon Over The Sea has been proving consistent this year and is feared most, while Sao Timothy could also be in the mix from his basement mark of 46. The drop back to a mile should suit Irish recruit Dappled light who has shaped with some promise in two starts for his new yard, so he’s not discounted lightly.
